If you wear contacts lenses and participate in sports you should take care to protect your eyes while wearing contacts.  One way of doing this is to wear sunglasses.  In many sports sunglasses are useful for blocking glare, but if you’re wearing contacts they also keep your contacts safely in your eye and moist by blocking glare and dust.   You could even go one step further and wear goggles.   Goggles give near 100% protection of your eyes and contacts while offering an unobstructed view.

If you prefer to not wear contact lenses while playing sports you could get yourself a pair of prescription sunglasses, or even a pair of prescription goggles.   Both sunglasses and goggles can be made to your exact prescription so that you can participate in sports safely and more effectively.   In this instance you could leave your contacts safe at home, soaking in solution for the next time you need them.

Sleeping in Contact Lenses

Unless you wear overnight contact lenses, you should never sleep in your contacts.   Take it from me, the next morning is a very uncomfortable situation for you eyes.   It’s also unhealthy for them as well.

If you do accidentally fall asleep with your contacts in, do not remove them immediately after waking up.  They will have adhered pretty solidly to your eye, so removing them could cause some damage.   You can actually rip small clumps of cells off your cornea which can then lead to infection.    Instead, squirt a bunch of contact lens moisturizer into your eyes and continue to wear them for a few hours.  This will let them rehydrate and pull away from your eye more easily and with no damage.  Once rehydrated, remove your contact lenses and store them as you normally would.

For those of you who wear contact lenses, you know that they can sometimes be a bit of a nuisance.   Sure, for the most part they are a great convenience, allowing you to see perfectly without eyeglasses and allowing you to wear any pair of sunglasses you want, instead of prescription sunglasses.  But when things go wrong with contact lenses, boy they can really go wrong.

One such problem that can occur is losing your contact lens IN YOUR EYE!  This is not only bad because your vision goes back to being blurry, but because it’s extremely uncomfortable.  This typically happens when rubbing your eyes with your hands.  You rub too hard, or have your eye slightly open, and the next thing you know your contact lens is lodged up on the top of your eye, or around the corner.   First thing…don’t panic!  It feels weird – like your contact is mere microns away from the frontal lobe of your brain – but odds are that it is not that far back as you think it is.  Close your eyes for a second, then blink a few times.  Many times this will bring the contact back around to it normal position.   You can also close your eye while looking forward, put your finger on your eyelid where you can feel your contact is stuck, then roll your eye up back in that direction to “catch” it and bring it back down.

Another problematic situation you might find yourself in is having your contact lens pop right out of your eye.  If you are able to catch it before it hits the ground, and catch it soon, you might be able to slip it right back in with no problems.  However, if it falls out and hits the floor, or any contaminated surface, do not put it back in.  Resist the urge to simply rinse it off with tap water.  Tap water may be safe to drink, but it is still full of microscopic nuggets of nastiness that can cause serious eye irritation.  What you can do, though, is to keep the contact moist in tap water until you can get your hands on some contact lens cleaning solution.

Yep, as great as contacts are, they can pose some irritating problems.  However, if you are careful, these problems should not occur very often.

Contact lenses have often been used in movies and television to give creepy characters creepy eyes.  The first time I can recall seeing theatrical contacts in use was in the Michael Jackson Thriller music video when I was a kid.  It scared the hell out of me.  When I watched a behind-the-scenes making of the video I watched as Michael was fitted with this huge, yellow ware wolf contact lenses.  These things covered the entire visible portion of his eye!

Many movies have used contact lenses to enhance characters.  Most recently, the Twilight movies have employed costume contacts for their cast of vampires and ware wolves.   Back in the 80′s a movie called Commando, starring Arnold Schwartzenegger, had a character with glass eye with a happy face on it.  To pull of the effect, the actor wore a contact lens with a happy face painted on it!

Recently, music artist Lady Gaga made a buzz about contacts when she (allegedly) wore a pair of large circle contacts in a video.   These, like the contact lenses from the Michael Jackson video, covered the entire part of her visible eye.   This stirred up a bit of controversy because such contacts are illegal to sell in the United States, so people started buying them online from over seas company…whose reputations for quality and health standards may not be the best.  There is doubt whether Lady Gaga actually wore such contacts in her music video at all.  Some claim that her big eyed look was the work of computer generated graphics effects and not contact lenses at all.
