Complete Your Costume with Halloween Contact Lenses

If you really want to go all out with your costume this year, then you should consider putting on some Halloween contact lenses. They are one of the easiest ways to make your costume look like it is professionally designed, and people will do a double-take when they look at you. There are a large number of styles available, so you can go with something that is over the top like a scaly dragon or you can go for a more subtle look like a bright blue. If you have ever put on contacts before, you will know how easy they are to apply. If you have not, you can learn very quickly.

Some of the classic styles of Halloween contact lenses include the Cat Eyes, which make your round pupil look like a slit. These are very subtle, and not everyone will notice them at first glance. Another odd look is the White Out, which gets rid of the colored iris around your pupil, making it seem like you only have a tiny black pupil. Of course, if you want your eyes to be completely black or white, those are available as well. From there, the types of lenses you can choose from only get crazier.

You might be looking for Halloween contact lenses that cover the entire sclera, which is the white part of the eye. You could get lenses with scales or with tiny rows of teeth. There are even styles that are designed to go with a zombie costume as they contain yellow and orange blotches along with veins running throughout. Of course, not all of them are scary, and some can give people a laugh. One type is the Smiley Face, which covers your iris with a yellow color. The pupil then becomes the nose on the face and the smile and two eyes go around it. Another option will make it look like you have stars in your eyes.

So if you want to really take your costume to the next level this year, get some Halloween contacts to complete the look. You can even use these lenses to be someone without needing to dress up as them. There are a lot of possibilities, and you may even find some you like to wear on a daily basis.

Who knew that high fashion would meet eyewear and become one of the most important accessories you own? But, aren’t you glad they did? Today’s eyewear is as much about creating a fashion statement as it is about protecting your eyes and providing you the ability to see clearly. From Oakley, Versace to DKNY, Nine West and even Converse, stepping out with out your glasses is compared to stepping out with out your shoes. One just does not do that! Eyeglass frame styles are hip, cool, sometimes understated, sometimes overstated and provide the fashion statement that eyeglass wearers have craved for quite some time.

Contact Lenses in Entertainment

Contact lenses have often been used in movies and television to give creepy characters creepy eyes.  The first time I can recall seeing theatrical contacts in use was in the Michael Jackson Thriller music video when I was a kid.  It scared the hell out of me.  When I watched a behind-the-scenes making of the video I watched as Michael was fitted with this huge, yellow ware wolf contact lenses.  These things covered the entire visible portion of his eye!

Many movies have used contact lenses to enhance characters.  Most recently, the Twilight movies have employed costume contacts for their cast of vampires and ware wolves.   Back in the 80′s a movie called Commando, starring Arnold Schwartzenegger, had a character with glass eye with a happy face on it.  To pull of the effect, the actor wore a contact lens with a happy face painted on it!

Recently, music artist Lady Gaga made a buzz about contacts when she (allegedly) wore a pair of large circle contacts in a video.   These, like the contact lenses from the Michael Jackson video, covered the entire part of her visible eye.   This stirred up a bit of controversy because such contacts are illegal to sell in the United States, so people started buying them online from over seas company…whose reputations for quality and health standards may not be the best.  There is doubt whether Lady Gaga actually wore such contacts in her music video at all.  Some claim that her big eyed look was the work of computer generated graphics effects and not contact lenses at all.

Types of Contact Lenses

There are two main types of contact lenses and we’re about to break them down for you.

Cosmetic Contact Lenses

Cosmetic contact lenses are designed to change the appearance of the eye.   This can be a subtle change, such as changing your brown eyes blue, or it can be a drastic change, such as making your eyes look like they have fireballs in them.   Cosmetic contacts can be obtain with or without a vision correction, but it is important to note that even if you want cosmetic contact lenses with NO vision correction (plano) you STILL need a prescription from a doctor to purchase them.  So, if you’re thinking about getting yourself some nice and scary costume contacts for Halloween, don’t forget to visit your doctor first.

Corrective Contact Lenses

These are the most common type of contact lenses.  Corrective contact lenses are meant to improve vision.  Corrective contact lenses may also be cosmetic contact lenses, but they don’t have to be.   Contacts for vision correction are great for a few reasons:  1) They improve vision, 2) They allow you to wear normal sunglasses, 3) They are discreet, 4) They are affordable and can be easily maintained.

With both corrective and cosmetic contacts it is very important to follow proper care and cleaning protocols.  Contacts go directly on the surface of your cornea, so you definitely want to be sure your contacts are clean before inserting them.   The last thing you want is to develop a corneal infection because you didn’t clean your contacts properly.

Halloween Contact Lenses

Halloween is coming up so you better get ready!   A perfect addition to any costume is some nice and freaky costume contact lenses.   There are a few companies out there who make them.  One of the most popular is Wild Eyes.  They offer a wide variety of crazy looking contact lenses.  A new player in the costume contact lenses game is Gothika.  These guys actually made contacts for the Twilight movies!

One thing to keep in mind is that – at least in the United States – costume contact lenses are considered medical devices by the FDA.   Therefore, even though your costume contacts may not be used for vision correction, you still need to get a prescription from an eye doctor before you can purchase them.  It is good that you know this NOW before you go shopping so that you aren’t disappointed.

As with any pair of contacts, you should take care of them carefully.  Make sure you clean them before and after you wear them, and don’t wear them for prolonged periods of time.  No matter how wild and crazy your Halloween party might get, don’t forget to remove your costume contacts before going to bed!
