Eyeglasses VS Contact Lenses

Eyeglasses are perfect for those who don’t like to wear contacts. contact lenses can sometimes irritate people’s eyes because they are not used to having a small piece of plastic in their eye, and it becomes uncomfortable. The greatest solution for this is to purchase a pair of Eye Glasses that have the correct lens prescription for your eyes and wear those instead of contact lenses.

Contacts can also become ripped every now and then, and when this happens they can scratch the cornea. If your cornea does become scratched by a ripped contact, the best solution for this is to simply not wear contact lenses for many days until your eye gets better. While you are waiting for your cornea to heal, you can wear Rx Glasses to correct your vision.

Though many might be hesitant to wear eye glasses because they fear that they could break, there are actually many types of eyeglass lenses that are designed not to break when hit or dropped. Shatter-resistant lenses, such as plastic, polycarbonate or other hi-index material lenses, have various degrees of strength to ensure that they will not break when dropped or mishandled. In fact, polycarbonate surpass AR lenses are 10 times more impact resistant then regular plastic lenses. These types of lenses are great for kids or sports activists.

Also, there are many types of eyeglass frame materials that are shatter resistant as well. Plastic and metal frames are good for shatter resistance because they are sturdy. Wire glasses frames don’t shatter, but they bend very easily so they are not ideal for kids or aggressive activities.

If you play sports and you prefer not to wear eyeglasses, you may also consider getting some prescription goggles.

Aside from being protective, Eye Glasses can be very stylish as well. Many popular celebrities, like Bono of U2, Woody Allen, and Elton John often wear glasses as a sense of fashion more than anything else. In fact, many fashion apparel companies like Calvin Klein, Levis, and Armani have a wide selection of eyewear models to choose from. These models are made for men and women, and include many types of glasses frames like cat eye, aviator, wayfarer, rimless, and many others. These eyeglass frames come in plastic material, metal, or a combination of both.

If you want your glasses to be hardley noticeable, you may like to choose rimless or semi-rimmed eyeglass frames. Rimless eyeglasses frames

Contact Lenses and Sports

If you wear contacts lenses and participate in sports you should take care to protect your eyes while wearing contacts.  One way of doing this is to wear sunglasses.  In many sports sunglasses are useful for blocking glare, but if you’re wearing contacts they also keep your contacts safely in your eye and moist by blocking glare and dust.   You could even go one step further and wear goggles.   Goggles give near 100% protection of your eyes and contacts while offering an unobstructed view.

If you prefer to not wear contact lenses while playing sports you could get yourself a pair of prescription sunglasses, or even a pair of prescription goggles.   Both sunglasses and goggles can be made to your exact prescription so that you can participate in sports safely and more effectively.   In this instance you could leave your contacts safe at home, soaking in solution for the next time you need them.

What you should never do is participate in rough sports while wearing contacts if your eyes are completely exposed.  This opens both your eyes and your contact lenses up to receiving damage.  Your contacts could dry out or collect dust and microscopic debris that might infect your eye.

Sleeping in Contact Lenses

Unless you wear overnight contact lenses, you should never sleep in your contacts.   Take it from me, the next morning is a very uncomfortable situation for you eyes.   It’s also unhealthy for them as well.

If you do accidentally fall asleep with your contacts in, do not remove them immediately after waking up.  They will have adhered pretty solidly to your eye, so removing them could cause some damage.   You can actually rip small clumps of cells off your cornea which can then lead to infection.    Instead, squirt a bunch of contact lens moisturizer into your eyes and continue to wear them for a few hours.  This will let them rehydrate and pull away from your eye more easily and with no damage.  Once rehydrated, remove your contact lenses and store them as you normally would.

Contact Lens Tips

For those of you who wear contact lenses, you know that they can sometimes be a bit of a nuisance.   Sure, for the most part they are a great convenience, allowing you to see perfectly without eyeglasses and allowing you to wear any pair of sunglasses you want, instead of prescription sunglasses.  But when things go wrong with contact lenses, boy they can really go wrong.

One such problem that can occur is losing your contact lens IN YOUR EYE!  This is not only bad because your vision goes back to being blurry, but because it’s extremely uncomfortable.  This typically happens when rubbing your eyes with your hands.  You rub too hard, or have your eye slightly open, and the next thing you know your contact lens is lodged up on the top of your eye, or around the corner.   First thing…don’t panic!  It feels weird – like your contact is mere microns away from the frontal lobe of your brain – but odds are that it is not that far back as you think it is.  Close your eyes for a second, then blink a few times.  Many times this will bring the contact back around to it normal position.   You can also close your eye while looking forward, put your finger on your eyelid where you can feel your contact is stuck, then roll your eye up back in that direction to “catch” it and bring it back down.

Another problematic situation you might find yourself in is having your contact lens pop right out of your eye.  If you are able to catch it before it hits the ground, and catch it soon, you might be able to slip it right back in with no problems.  However, if it falls out and hits the floor, or any contaminated surface, do not put it back in.  Resist the urge to simply rinse it off with tap water.  Tap water may be safe to drink, but it is still full of microscopic nuggets of nastiness that can cause serious eye irritation.  What you can do, though, is to keep the contact moist in tap water until you can get your hands on some contact lens cleaning solution.

Yep, as great as contacts are, they can pose some irritating problems.  However, if you are careful, these problems should not occur very often.

Contact Lenses in Entertainment

Contact lenses have often been used in movies and television to give creepy characters creepy eyes.  The first time I can recall seeing theatrical contacts in use was in the Michael Jackson Thriller music video when I was a kid.  It scared the hell out of me.  When I watched a behind-the-scenes making of the video I watched as Michael was fitted with this huge, yellow ware wolf contact lenses.  These things covered the entire visible portion of his eye!

Many movies have used contact lenses to enhance characters.  Most recently, the Twilight movies have employed costume contacts for their cast of vampires and ware wolves.   Back in the 80′s a movie called Commando, starring Arnold Schwartzenegger, had a character with glass eye with a happy face on it.  To pull of the effect, the actor wore a contact lens with a happy face painted on it!

Recently, music artist Lady Gaga made a buzz about contacts when she (allegedly) wore a pair of large circle contacts in a video.   These, like the contact lenses from the Michael Jackson video, covered the entire part of her visible eye.   This stirred up a bit of controversy because such contacts are illegal to sell in the United States, so people started buying them online from over seas company…whose reputations for quality and health standards may not be the best.  There is doubt whether Lady Gaga actually wore such contacts in her music video at all.  Some claim that her big eyed look was the work of computer generated graphics effects and not contact lenses at all.

Toric Contact Lenses

If you have astigmatism you probably wear toric contact lenses.  Toric contact lenses are specially made to correct for astigmatism.   Astigmatism is caused when the cornea is oblong shaped instead of perfectly round.

To correct the vision problems caused by astigmatism you must wear toric contact lenses, which are specially shaped to offset the the effects of an oblong cornea.  These contacts must be inserted in a certain way.   As such, toric contacts have tiny little marks on them so that you can be sure you are  inserting them properly.  Many toric contact lenses can auto-correct themselves if they are inserted incorrectly.  They are beveled in just a way that they will automatically adjust themselves to the right positioning within about 20 minutes after insertion.

Types of Contact Lenses

There are two main types of contact lenses and we’re about to break them down for you.

Cosmetic Contact Lenses

Cosmetic contact lenses are designed to change the appearance of the eye.   This can be a subtle change, such as changing your brown eyes blue, or it can be a drastic change, such as making your eyes look like they have fireballs in them.   Cosmetic contacts can be obtain with or without a vision correction, but it is important to note that even if you want cosmetic contact lenses with NO vision correction (plano) you STILL need a prescription from a doctor to purchase them.  So, if you’re thinking about getting yourself some nice and scary costume contacts for Halloween, don’t forget to visit your doctor first.

Corrective Contact Lenses

These are the most common type of contact lenses.  Corrective contact lenses are meant to improve vision.  Corrective contact lenses may also be cosmetic contact lenses, but they don’t have to be.   Contacts for vision correction are great for a few reasons:  1) They improve vision, 2) They allow you to wear normal sunglasses, 3) They are discreet, 4) They are affordable and can be easily maintained.

With both corrective and cosmetic contacts it is very important to follow proper care and cleaning protocols.  Contacts go directly on the surface of your cornea, so you definitely want to be sure your contacts are clean before inserting them.   The last thing you want is to develop a corneal infection because you didn’t clean your contacts properly.

Contact Lenses – Some History

Believe it or not, contact lenses have a pretty long and interesting  history.   Leonardo Da Vinci has even been credited with the first conception of contact lenses in  his 1508 Codex of the Eye, Manual D where he mentions altering the power of the cornea by submerging the eye in a bowl of water.   But some argue that he was not proposing this mehtod for correcting vision, only for learning a bit more of how the eye worked.

In 1887, German ophthalmologist Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick made the first official contact lens that was able to be fitted directly onto the surface of the eye.   And get this…it was made out of blown glass!  You definitely wouldn’t want to get into a fight while wearing those contact lenses!   His first test subjects for these contact lenses were rabbits.  However, since rabbits eat so many carrots they didn’t real need vision correction, so he then experimented on himself. and a small group of volunteers.  Can you imagine that call for volunteers?   Hey, I need a bunch of people who well let me shove blow glass in their eyes!   These blown glass contact lenses actually fit over the entire surface of the visible eye…whites and all!

It wasn’t until 1949 that the corneal contact lens was invented.   Instead of covering the entire eye, these contacts only covered the cornea.   This is when contacts evolved into a form more recognizable to us today.  With some refinement, these contacts became very popular through the 1960′s.

As you might imagine, these early contacts were pretty fragile.   But in 1971 the United States FDA approved “Soflens” material which allowed contacts to be made soft and flexibly, thereby extended their life pan and usability.
